The Coast to Coast Cycle Route runs from Whitehaven to Tynemouth (147 miles), and is one of the most popular long distance cycle routes in the UK. Whilst the route is challenging, involving both road and off-road cycling and steep climbs, between 12,800 – 15,000 people complete it every year, many of which are families and young riders.

The C2C opened in 1994. It was developed by Sustrans, a British charity that promotes sustainable transport, and the National Cycle Network of which it is a part of. It became the first UK destination to win the Smithsonian Environment Award in 1998, for providing ‘a lasting contribution to protecting the environment’. A year later, the C2C route won a Silver Medal in the Green Transport Category at the England for Excellence awards at the English Tourism Council.

In keeping with tradition, every year participants begin the journey by dipping their back wheel into the Irish Sea, and once complete dip their front wheel into the North Sea before heading home.

Although the C2C is for cyclists of all abilities, prior training is advised. Both road and off-road cycling should be practiced, as well as cycling up steep hills (the highest climb in C2C is 2000 feet). Most participants complete the route over a few days, but more experienced riders have completed it within 24 hours.

It is recommended to cycle the route from West to East, in order to take advantage of winds and favorable gradients. See below for the entire route.
